Red Cedar Moth Protection

lynne travis

Moths are well know pest when it comes to your wardrobe, jumpers and fabrics can be left in a poor state of repair. If you see moths flying in your house, they probably aren't clothes moths, but the type that infests flour and grains. Clothes moths shun light and are so discreet that you'll probably never see them. Actually the adult flying moths won't do any harm, damage to woolens is actually done by the larvae of clothes moths and carpet beetles.

It is always the better option to chose natural non-toxic options in your home that is safe for you and the environment whilst effectively solving your problem. There are various natural and pleasant scented options to repell moths whilst also adding some wonderful aromatic aromas to your home:

• Place scented lavender bags in your wardrobe and drawers, as it's highly repellent to moths and other pesky insects.

• Mint leaves are another effective moth repellent. Place a handful of dried peppermint in a sachet, or place fresh loose leaves among your clothes. Peppermint oil is very effective too, just apply a few drops to a cotton ball, and place in your drawers and wardrobe. Mint oil is also a good repellant for flies and spiders!

• Fill a sachet bag with a combination of cloves, thyme and rosemary to keep moths at bay for months. Moths dislike the smell of these herbs so make sure you replace the contents of your sachets every six months, or whenever they begin to lose their fragrance.

• One of the most highly effective and natural ways of deterring moths is by using the scent of cedar wood oil in your home. The dark-coloured heartwood of red cedar contains natural oils that kill clothes-moth larvae, making cedar wood products a natural non-toxic product for you and your home. At The Candle Tree in Gloucester we sell a range of easy to use cedar wood products naturally scented with cedar oil. These are perfect to add to your clothing areas and you can easily replenish the scent to keep by sanding the wood lightly or dabbing on additional cedar oil.

• Place the cedar items on a piece of paper to protect the clothing from the oils in the cedar.
• When the scent begins to fade, rough the wood slightly with sandpaper.

Red Cedar Hooks by Redecker
American red cedar has a fragrant aroma that is pleasing to people but repels moths.
Place 2 – 5 cedar pieces per wardrobe unit, in such a way that they are not covered by clothes to protect them form the oils in the wood. When the scent begins to fade, rough the wood slightly with sandpaper. This type of moth protection is absolutely environmentally friendly, since American red cedar is not an endangered plant cultivated under governmental regulations.

Whilst cedar wood products are extremely effective at preventing a moth infestation, or ridding your home of an existing infestation, it is also important how and where you store your clothing. Here are some tips to make sure you're storing your clothes properly for a moth free closet.

Moth 02.jpg

• Wash all clothing, and dry well before packing it away at the end of the season. This will help to kill any larvae that may be present in the clothing. Cotton garments can also be ironed as a further deterrent.

• Store clothing in sealed containers such as chests, plastic storage containers, suitcases, where moths can't get to them. Zip wool garments into garment bags. Be sure to move wool socks them out of your sock drawer during the warmer months.

• Moths prefer moist environments, so store your clothes in a dry area of your home. Storing clothes in the attic or under your bed is definitely preferable to storing clothes in the basement or garage.

• Moths gravitate towards dirt, so vacuum your carpets and skirting boards regularly to prevent an infestation or eliminate an existing infestation.

• If you're dealing with a current infestation, change your vacuum bag regularly to ensure you're getting the larvae out of your home.

• If you find moths on clothing, place the affected garment in the freezer for 24 hours to kill any active larvae.

Easter Scene

Easter is nearly upon us and it has been a long, cold and snowy winter! We are sure everyone is especially eager to welcome Easter and the unfolding of Spring. What a beautiful season to embrace as the first flowers of Spring emerge and the countryside is full of lively spring lambs. Along with those cherished brisk sunny days offering a glimmer of hope of the new season to come, Easter brings a break from the winter months and welcomes these celebrations.

Here, at The Candle Tree, in Gloucester we have been stocking up on Easter goodies, and have a fabulous window display to get our customers in the mood for the Spring season! Take a look online at our shop or come along to our shop for all your seasonal Easter treats!

Here are some interesting facts about Easter to whet your appetite and brighten your spirits for the coming holiday!

• The name 'Easter' owes its origin to Eostre or Eastre, an Anglo-Saxon goddess of light and the dawn who was honoured at pagan festivals celebrating the arrival of spring.

• Easter is known to be the Sunday that marks the end of the Holy Week, an event that commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It marks the end of the fasting ritual known as ‘Lent’. Lent takes place every year in the 40 days leading up to Easter.

• Easter is celebrated at different times by Eastern and Western Christians. This is because the dates for Easter in Eastern Christianity are based on the Julian Calendar.

• Eggs have been seen as an ancient symbol of fertility, while springtime is considered to bring new life and rebirth.

Decorated Eggs

• Secular celebrations around the Easter period involve egg hunts, decorating eggs, of course; easter egg eating along with a celebration meal.

Pysanky is a traditional egg craft in Ukraine and Poland. The method is similar to batik - patterns are drawn on the egg with wax, which then protects the covered areas from the dye that is applied. By repeating this process with different colours of dye, a multi-coloured pattern is built up. Finally, the wax is removed to reveal the colours that were covered up at each stage. Egg dyes were once made out of natural items such as onion peels, tree bark, flower petals, and juices.

• As well as eggs, chicks and lambs, rabbits are associated with the easter period. The first story of a rabbit (later named the 'Easter Bunny') hiding eggs in a garden was published in 1680 within German literature.

Easter Rabbit

• There are many theories of how rabbits became associated with Easter. One such theory is that rabbits were associated with the Teutonic deity 'Eostra'; the goddess of spring and fertility, for their especially high reproduction rate.

• According to some sources, the Easter bunny first arrived in America in the 1700s with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Their children made nests in which this creature could lay its colored eggs.

• The tallest chocolate Easter egg was made in Italy in 2011. Standing 10.39 metres tall and weighing 7,200 kg, it was taller than a giraffe and heavier than an elephant.

Valentine's Day

lynne travis

Happy Valentine's Day from The Candle Tree. If you enjoy celebrating this occasion Valentine's is big event is many countries around the world. About 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year. This makes it the second largest seasonal card sending time of the year, Christmas being the first!

There are lots of different theories as to how Valentine's Day originated:

• During the Middle Ages in both England and France it was commonly accepted that February 14 was the beginning of the bird’s mating season and as a result the date became associated with one of love and coupling.

• Credit is given to the Romans for the birth of Valentine’s Day. According to one theory, the Romans celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia from February 13 to 15. This was a time in which fertility was celebrated.

• The oldest known Valentine in existence was written by the revered poet; Charles, The Duke of New Orleans way back in 1415. The Duke is credited with coined the phrase ‘My Valentine’.

• Leading on from this, literature giants Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare contributed significantly to the growth in popularity of February 14 as a day for the lovers during the Middle Ages.

• In 1537, England's King Henry VII officially declared February 14th the holiday of St. Valentine's Day.

So, once Valentine's Day was an established celebrated holiday, how did we come to associated flowers and chocolates with the celebration? The history of giving your loved one Valentine’s Day flowers comes from the old-fashioned custom of sending floral bouquets to pass on non-verbal messages. Introduced in the 18th century by Charles II of Sweden, each flower had a specific meaning attached to it, making it possible to have an entire conversation using only flowers. Chocolate came later, gradually increasing in popularity from the Victorian era onwards. These days, people are quite likely to give more varied gifts that are symbolic of love and romance; such as candles, perfume and jewellery.

• 73% of people who buy flowers on this day are men, while only 27% are women. In fact, it has been recorded that 15% of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day.

• The red rose was the favourite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Red roses are considered the flower of love because the color red stands for strong romantic feelings.

• Interestingly, physicians of the 1800s commonly advised their patients to eat chocolate to calm their pining for lost love.

• The Victorians increased the popularity of giving chocolate as a love gift. Etiquette books and chocolate advertisers alike encouraged the view that an exchange of chocolates between a man and a woman was tantamount to a declaration of love.

• Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for this holiday in the late 1800s. Today, more than 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold!• Every Valentine's Day, the Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare's lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet.

• 220,000 is the average number of wedding proposals on Valentine's Day each year!

Wishing you all a lovely Valentine's Day and remember it's not too late to treat yourself or a loved one! We have large range of candles, hand crafted french soaps, home fragrances, bath & body products, jewellery, creative lighting and accessories. Pop along to our treasure trove of gifts based in the heart of Gloucester, or take a look online at The Candle Tree.

• According to the Guinness Book of World Records, roses are the oldest species of plant to be grown as decoration. Ancient Romans cultivated the flowers to decorate buildings and furniture, and even laid rose petal carpets.

• About 100 million roses are grown for Valentine's Day each year. And florists spend the months leading up to the big day worrying about the bad weather that might ruin crops around the world.

Merry Christmas

lynne travis

So Christmas is nearly upon us! We hope in these busy times you have managed to enjoy the festivities and are looking forward to Christmas Day. Another important day in the advent calendar is Christmas Eve, which has many of its own customs and traditions. Christmas Eve is celebrated in different ways across the world, varying by country and region. Common practices include the attendance of special religious observances such as Midnight Mass. In Catholic countries such as Spain, Mexico, Poland and Italy, Midnight Mass is the most important church service of the Christmas season.

Christmas Eve is also the day when people in many countries, such as Germany, Sweden and Portugal exchange their presents. In many European countries, including Serbia and Slovakia, Christmas Eve is when the Christmas tree is brought into the house and decorated. It was also traditional to bring a yule log into the house and light it on Christmas Eve. It was lit using a piece of the previous year's log and then would burn non-stop until the Twelfth Night (5th January/6th January). Here in the UK, there are some traditions associated with Christmas Eve. For example, those with children leave mince pies out for Father Christmas and carrots for his reindeer. Midnight Mass is also still a popular tradition here in the UK and many people have their own family Christmas eve traditions.

Candles are very much associated with the Christmas period; they are an important festive accompaniment to the holiday. Lighting candles on Christmas Eve is also an ancient Christmas tradition. Typically, a big white candle was kept lit during the night of Christmas Eve, signifying Christ, who is understood in Christian religious scripture to be the "light of the world".  In many churches throughout the world, people gather together on Christmas Eve in joyful anticipation of Christmas and participate in a special candlelight service with festive music, carols and scripture readings. There are many different reasons why candles are associated with Christmas, although the date of origin remains unknown.

• Candles were used during ancient winter solstice celebrations a way of remembering that spring would soon come.

• One of the earliest records of candles being used at Christmas is from the middle ages, where a large candle was used to represent the star of Bethlehem. This might have led to the custom of the Advent Crown and Advent Candles.

• Perhaps one of the most famous uses of candles at Christmas time is by carollers during candlelit services.

• Candles are also used during Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Light which is also celebrated during winter. During the eight nights of Hanukkah, a candle is lit in a special Menorah (candelabra) called a 'hanukkiyah'.

• In some parts of Ireland, it was traditional to have a Yule candle instead of a Yule log.

• In Southern India, Christians often put small oil burning clay lamps onto the flat roofs of their homes to celebrate Christmas.

• Christians in China use paper lanterns to decorate their Christmas trees. Candles are also used as part of the St. Lucia's or St. Lucy's Day celebrations in Sweden.

• Candles were also originally used to decorate Christmas Trees, until much safer electric options were invented.

I hope you are all looking forward to a lovely Christmas and have all pf your gifts organised. If there's one or two bits you require or you could make room for a few extra festive goodies over Christmas and New Year, then there are plenty of gorgeous festive treats here at The Candle Tree:

French Soap With Snail Extract

Snail Extract Soap

You may think this is a new beauty trend but snail extract has in fact been used for centuries as a well known skin remedy and beautifying treatment. Used as a skin treatment in ancient Greece, Hippocrates prescribed a snail essence-based home remedy for external inflammation. In France it was noticed that snail farmers had extremely smooth skin, and was therefore a sought after moisturiser. Snail essence has made a big comeback in recent years as a Korean-based beauty trend. Many skin care brands are selling moisturisers, masks, makeup creams and serums with snail slime in them, there are even snail-infused facials available in New York aptly named; “EscarGlow”!

When snails are agitated, they excrete a thick fluid as a means to protect themselves. When concentrated, this slimy snail mucin is said to aid human skin by hydrating, preventing ageing and improving wrinkles and scars. The nature of the snail essence itself is that it is very thick, full of nutrients and provides a protective coating. Snail extract contains the super hydrating hyaluronic acid,  glycoprotein enzymes and peptides, all great additions for a great looking skin!

Here at The Candle Tree, we sell luxurious French soap which contains this wonderfully beneficial snail extract, a treat to protect and enhance your skin. With the addition of soothing shea butter, this soap is a natural skin booster for all skin types, especially sensitive, dry and ageing.

New Location Location Location!

lynne travis

It's official! We will be relocating from our wonderful premises in Longhope to a new larger shop in Gloucester, where will be increasing our selection of gifts and introducing new fabulous products. Our new shop is in a wonderful location just off Westgate Street, and right next door to the Cathedral, with ample parking nearby. The Candle Tree in Longhope will close at the end of September and a new shop in Gloucester will open in mid October, where will have a wonderful Christmas set up, so please keep an eye on our announcements for more exact dates!

New Location College Street Gloucester

Situated on the attractive College street our new shop has a lovely view of the Cathedral one end and some beautiful Georgian architecture on the other side. Gloucester Abbey was a Benedictine abbey in the city of Gloucester, England. Since 1541 it has been Gloucester Cathedral. An interesting historical fact is that when Henry V111 and Anne Boleyn visited Gloucester on July 31st 1535, they entered the grounds of St Peters Abbey (Gloucester Cathedral) not by the main gateway in St. Mary’s Street, but by "Seynt Edwardes Lane” (College Street).

Apart from it’s use as an access to the Abbey, College Street was initially residential. As the population of the city and it’s trade grew, some of the properties in the lane became commercial. This may also account for various name changes such as  'Ironmongers row'.

College street was initially very narrow, it was originally only 10 feet and 9 inches wide. It was widened by the Gloucester Cathedral Approaches Company in the 1890’s. This was to provide a ceremonial access to the Cathedral. This also made it much easier for trades to pass through and it became a busy hub of commerce. The widening of the street also meant that, today, as we turn into College Street we are greeted with a magnificent view of Gloucester Cathedral.

Gloucester Cathedral is really a stunning building, in fact many of the former abbey buildings have been Grade I listed, including the Cathedral, the Cathedral Cloisters, Cathedral Treasury and the Cathedral Chapter House, together with the Little Cloister, Little Cloister House, the Infirmary and Church House, the former Abbot's Lodging. Pilgrims came during the Medieval period, and they still come, but for a different reason. Today, they come not to pray, but to admire the beauty of this fine building. Most of the great English cathedrals can trace some part of their design to architectural or stylistic innovations that were developed at Gloucester. For example, The origins of the breathtaking fan vault at King's College Chapel in Cambridge can be traced back to the cloisters at Gloucester.

Gloucester is well served for high street brands in the city centre, King's Walk Shopping Centre and Eastgate Shopping Centre. Every Friday, you will find the best in locally sourced produce at the popular Farmers Market on The Cross (where the 'Gate Streets' meet). The City Centre also hosts seasonal craft markets. The Cathedral Quarter where we are (Westgate Street, College Street and the picturesque College Court) is where you will find friendly and independent boutiques - perfect for gift shopping. There is also Gloucester Quays which has become a favourite destination for visitors with its great value designer brands, as well as its multiplex cinema, restaurant quarter and many festivals. Also, Gloucester is fortunate to have a range of anitique shops and flea markets for shoppers browsing for unique collectibles. Come and pay us a visit at our new location, we will have a larger selection of our wonderful candles, natural soaps, superb gifts and lots lots more!

Seaweed Soap

lynne travis

Here at The Candle Tree we stock a wonderful selection of French soaps, in particular our seaweed soap has extra special skin benefits. All our 100g French Artisan soaps are enriched with Bio Argan Oil, these soaps are without artificial fragrance and colour.

Seaweed soap brings nourishment, exfoliation and a natural source of nutrients to your skin care routine. In this case, nature really does provide everything truly beneficial for your skin. Take a look at these benefits more closely:

• Exfoliation

Seaweed is a natural and gentle exfoliator. This helps naturally and gently remove the dead layers of skin, as well as assisting in removing dirt and oil that can clog our pores. Its inherent exfoliation action rejuvenates and cleanses without using harsh chemicals.

• Elasticity
The vitamins and minerals in our seaweed soap will help to increase circulation and detoxify your skin. This will help to keep your skin healthy, toned, plumped and reduces imperfections such as scars, stretch marks, and cellulite. Seaweed does wonders to aging skin by working to promote tissue regeneration activities in the skin to create skin elasticity.

Hair Nourishment
Seaweed minerals help to nourish the hair by feeding the shafts and the ducts of the scalp with nutrients to help improve the health of the hair. Seaweed has a complete spectrum of chelated minerals, which makes it easy to absorb into your hair giving dull lifeless hair their texture and shine.

• Purifying & Detoxifying
Seaweed extracts are a popular choice for oily or acne prone skin because of it’s ability to work gently to purify and detoxify whilst promoting circulation and healthy skin rejuvenation.

• Hydrating
Seaweed is full of lipids, proteins, minerals and vitamins, which are easy to absorb to deeply moisturize and nourish the skin. Research also shows that nutrients from seaweeds are better able to penetrate deep into the skin more efficiently than other skin care ingredients to help your skin maintain it’s firmness and hydration.

• Re-mineralizing
Seaweed is packed with high concentrations of minerals such as fluorine, magnesium and calcium which will enable you to achieve and restore a radiant skin complexion. The minerals contained in seaweed help to maintain the skins natural moisture balance – which is neither too dry or too oily.

• Anti-inflammatory
Seaweed has therapeutic properties in the treatment of sensitive and allergy prone skin. Seaweed is high in vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12 which is useful in protecting the skins surface and reduction of inflammation. It is a used as active ingredient for many in modern skin care products because of it’s natural tendency to reduce excessive irritation and redness.

• Oxygenating
If you combine seaweed into a skin massage for approximately 10 minutes, the the oxygen content on the massaged areas will increase by up to 15 percent! Lymphatic drainage is also improved since the strokes and pressure on the skin helps in the release of toxins.

• Natural, Organic and Pure
Seaweed in the deep seas is as pure as they come. You can be sure that there are no artificial genetic manipulation or fertilizers used meaning what you are putting on and into your bodies is chemical free.

Our handmade French soaps are infused with many natural ingredients and our seaweed soap captures all the richness of the sea. Add this to your daily skin routine and see the amazing benefits for yourself!

Cherry French Soap

Cherry Skin Care

The cherry season is upon us so celebrate these wonderful luscious fruits by incorporating into your skin care routine. The bright colour of the red cherry comes from its rich supply of anthocyanins, chlorogenic acid, quercetin and kaempferol which is high in antioxidants. They also act as anti inflammatory agent which can help a wide range of skin conditions. Our cherry bar soap is the perfect combination of these benefits!

Cherry Facts!

• Cherries originated in the area between the Black and Caspian seas of Asia Minor and they are believed to have spread to Ancient Greece and the Mediterranean (where they were first cultivated) by 70 BC.

• History tells us that cherries were integral part of the Legionnaire’s diet and they were introduced to Europe with the establishment of the Roman Empire. Throughout history, cherries were always valued as a food source and during the 15th and 16th centuries they were used for medicinal purposes.

• Cherries may benefit people suffering from chronic inflammatory conditions such as gout, pancreatitis, or prostitis, as well as allergic conditions including asthma, hay fever, eczema and hives because they contain the compounds cyanidin and quercetin.

• Cherries in general are rich in hormone and antioxidant melatonin, which controls the sleep/wake cycle of the brain. Studies suggest it can be used to improve sleep quality.

• Red cherries contain 17 different antioxidant compounds which are by far the highest levels of antioxidants in comparison to any other fruits. Antioxidants fight free radicals which are responsible for making you look old thus effectively slowing down the aging process.

• Cherry juice is highly recommended as an alternative treatment for acne, vulgaris and rosacea. Rich in vitamin A, red cherries have antibacterial properties that fight skin bacteria and effectively remove toxins from the blood that often are the culprits behind acne outbreaks.

• Red Cherry benefits for hair: Studies suggest consumption of red cherries which are a rich source of antioxidants is good for hair growth and can control hair fall effectively.
